this was a whole slew of chaos over an idea. props to karlie for being the scapegoat...yet again. I think the best methods of attack have already been metioned i.e. flooding them with letters and e-mails...and solving some of the communities bigger issues (read lack of unity within) internally. I do agree with anglo, that it's not necessarily a divide so much as it's a prefernce thing. personally, I enjoy HIP-HOP...in all forms. I've been to GC, BC, and other weekly events in the area as time has allowed. I have had a good time at all the events I've been to. I've noticed diversity at all events. I see people at each one that have all the respect for the other sub-genres of hip-hop that are out there. So much negative energy has been wasted in this thread about trying to right a wrong. One suggestion is all it takes to start the fire, I guess. "To discuss is to exchange knowledge, to argue is to exchange ignorance."

Oh yes, if you guys are serious about the paper thing (Blaze & True) let me know. I'm always down to help out with any writing. Even if it's some kind of free lance type deal while I'm in town. Eventually I'll be free of this contract and I'll be back in AZ to stay...I'm gonna need a job.

my 2cents....

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

I like both scenes.... and enjoy the diversity of the local hip-hop scene.

I'ma big fan of AZ hip-hop, and did not percieve any alterior motives when reading the article. I did find it peculiar that Rocca Dolla came off as so confrontational... storming out with a "this is fucking bullshit". He seems soo laid back, one of the coolest cats I've met in AZ... definitely seemed outta character.

Also, the part about Willy leaving to avoid drama... that seemed out of character too.... isn't he the one that started drama and SHUT DOWN the phx round-table before it even got started? Reading him as "Mr. Innocent" trying to aviod conflict was kinda funny.

All in all... I hope the local sences "grows" from this article. As in a greater appreciation and tolerance for the diversity and other styles that hip-hop allows.... and also a PHX MC bout to blow up on the national level, cause I do hope Willy's album goes bananas nation-wide and people can FINALLY see we more than dust and cactus!

I know Justus had intended for the entire scene to shine. Also, I think Karlie's taking too much heat for just wanting to discuss the "options" or "appropriate response" to the article. I would be enraged too if I felt I was misquoted on a topic I am very passionate about... and don't get it twisted Karlie is very passionate about hip-hop and supporting the local scene. We are blessed to have her as apart of our community.

and BIG UPS to ILL AL for remembering the Natives! We apart of the AZ fabric, even in hip-hop!

She needed a better source, Kool Herc recited poetry over funk records? Whoever submitted that to wikipedia need to be knocked upside the head. Also 3rd Bass were respected mcs and Everlast hit with Jump Around long before 98.

As far as Nikki's comment about GC housing hustlers, gangsters, pimps, dealers and what not.............go to the GC myspace page look at the pics in blogs and tell me if that's what you see. All hip hoppers aint the above, that's the part that I disliked the most.

Yo Chief, Willy has grown much since that incident at Majerle's as admitted in a post, maybe his only one on this very site. Best part of the article below...

"It's a lot of bullshit going on.........Everything is petty, nothing in the streets, just a lot of people talking stuff. There are a lot of issues going on in Arizona that need to be addressed. But I'd rather fix it in Phoenix than go on a national level and do a diss track against one of my Arizona brothers. I'm not gonna do that. There's a lot of talent out here. If people would stop the hating and the bullshit and come together, it could be bigger."

Also like the symbolism of duke being born in the sky like an angel. I remember stories of those floods being told to me when I was young, that's some AZ history right there lot of younger heads aint familiar with. Also liked the part that mentioned used to rap over Kool Moe Dee and Too Short tapes. Forgot all about fine ass Tiffany that used to work for Power.........just thought I would refocus on who this article was supposed to be about as it seemed the topic got lossed in the shuffle. If I get an interview with Willy crackin' for Artofrhyme yall will get to see how an interview should be done

PEACE

Thats true a lot of the shit about Willy has been getting overlooked because of the other negative comments about our scene. But we should give credit for the love they showed Willy Northpole. They probably should have just done the article about him and the artists getting signed instead of going into all that other bulllshit and causing problems. But then again, I probably would have been mad they didn't mention those nights so its a catch22. Either way they fucked it up pretty good. But I hope in the process Willy was at least given a bright light to shine with.

Everlast came with "I Got The Knack" back in 1990. That was back when he rolled with Ice T and Rhyme Syndicate.

Kid Rock had "Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast" and toured with Ice Cube looooong before he was a "Devil Without a Cause".

Yeah, 3rd Bass was the shit, but MC Serch has critical and commercial success with "Return of the Product"

Aside from that, Kurtis Mantronik and DJ Muggs were both active AND respected during the 80's as DJ's and producers (though some would argue with Kurtis being white, he's actually Syrian and Jamacian. Muggs is Italian American and Norwegian). Outside of those two, there was also DJ Slip from Compton's Most Wanted, another white cat that contributed heavily to CMW's first three albums.

There's always been respected white cats in hip hop. She just didn't know much about them.

After reading the article, I felt no pride in being a hiphop artist
in AZ; when I should have.

But, what I can't forget about here, is "perception".
This article was obviously not written for me or my peers.
I could see how an outsider, not familiar with the culture
would percieve this article as interesting. It perpetuates the
notion that Phx AZ HipHop is no different than what you've
witnessed on screen and print from other locations...
Drama, Beef, the pretence of Violence, racial divides.
Like many of you, I believe that, that was the intent of the article
and the target audience were "outsiders".

In truth
I've lived in many states, and have yet to see a hiphop "scene" so racially
diverse, try so hard to make sure that the diversity that makes
the scene interesting, is not exploited in any means that may cause
division. I have had my share of discussion about the love/hate
between "backpack" and "mainstream" artist ...but I have never had
a discussion about the "Color" or "ethnicity" of those artist.

From a writers point of view...I think the article was poorly written,
even for an "outsider" audience. NT's audience and AZ deserves the truth,
no matter how boring; not another iron, stirring the fire beneath
a hip hop in hopes that it will boil over.

I believe the article to be FALSE in it's representation of the "scene".
Though the direct light shined bright on Willy (he deserves it), the rest
of the scene was covered in darkness.

Be easy

I wasn't going to say anything regarding the artice but after reading this it all makes sense now and I've got to chime in.

In my opinion this article, and your seeming animosity towards the Blunt, per your quotes in the article, stems from this MySpace message that was sent over a year ago. I was sitting right there when that "Key" member wrote that message and I thought it was perfectly acceptable. You were sending out messages about how Groove Candy was THE BEST HIP HOP night in the Valley after maybe a month of being around. For those who had worked for 5 years plus to actually be the best hip hop night and gain national exposure it was insulting. While it may have just been your promotion tactics, as you said at the time, it came off very egotistical. If you're going to put yourself and your night out there like that and start tap dancing on peoples toes expect some sorta heat and don't get bent out of shape when someone calls you on it.

As for causing a shitstorm. The only one who caused the shitstorm was you after you went around boo hooing and told anyone who would listen how mean that "Key" member was to you. You even went around showing the message to people. You started that drama and made it into something much larger than it ever should have been. I can't even count how many people approached that "Key" member asking why he was "mad at Karlie Hustle and what was up with that MySpace message?" Funny since that "Key" member never said a word about the whole thing. Everyword that you said in that article in regards to the Blunt Club oozed with animosity and I find it mind-blowingly pathetic that you're still mentioning that MySpace message.

Other than that I think the article was disgraceful and should never have been written. At least the New Times has a pair of balls and is standing by the article, no matter how bad it is, yet we have people who were interviewed feeling quite a backlash and are backpeddling with a fury to try and put themselves in a more positive light.

AND

If it's about the BEST HIP HOP night in the Valley why wasn't The Hidden House mentioned? Didn't they just win "Best Hip Hop Night" this year? Didn't they just beat both of the 2 supposed best hip hop nights in the Valley?

Funny that no one mentioned Al Page and all of his hard work.

{TAKEN FROM NEWTIMES}Groove Candy founder and Power 98.3 DJ Karlie Hustle, summed up the dichotomy in the cover story. "There's definitely a division amongst the scenes," squawked Hustle to D'Andrea. "They [the Blunt Club] do have that sort of white hippie, hemp necklace, backpacker, super-hip-hop-nerd group. And then you have a more mainstream 'commercial' community." "Stung by the negative feedback, Karlie Hustle on the same site changed her tune, and suggested D'Andrea was off-base because she is an "an older, white person." Uh, Karlie, D'Andrea is only one year older than you. (D'Andrea's 31; Hustle is 30.) And Hustle's as white as the walls in this warbler's office. To this tail-wagger, Hustle copped a little-known fact: She's of Armenian descent. Maybe her real name's Hustlamanian. On the phone, she talks like any other white chick. But on air, she affects the black, street vernacular. "
