New Times does Sonny Long TOO wrong...

Just now reading the article...about two pages in. It's a cover story...and similar to how she did Phoenix/Tempe hip-hop last time, Niki D'andrea is making a complete mockery of local music again...

You can debate amongst yourselves if the mockery is because the article is on Sonny Long in the first place (which I'm sure some will argue against) OR you can argue that the way it was done makes him look terrible. EITHER way...it's another bad NT look by D'andrea in terms of how the local "black scene" (to use a term from her previous article) is depicted. She seems quite invested in making a certain segment of AZ musicians all look like some off-brand morons.

I'll need to finish reading it now before further commentary, but that's my take thus far.

P.S. I have no negative things to say about Sonny Long. Anytime I run into him, he's cool as a fan.

yeah i agree with about the article being a bit candid. although i was interviewed for the story as well, i was caught off guard by the final product.

This woman is admitted to not being a hip hop head and cats still be effing with her. Remember when Trife first told me about being interviewed by this broad and I just shook my head. It's funny cause outside of hip hop New Times is pretty dope. So this is the issue that came out today? Cats need to hit up New Times and should reference real hip hop cats they should have working for them, that's what other regions would do

Her agenda is always the same. Make fun of a scene she doesn't understand by walking into it with an agenda to disrespect or slight it in any way possible. If she thinks Sonny is such a joke, why even print a story on him? Shouldn't a paper like that want to report on something they feel is worthwhile? If it's not Sonny, fine. But don't give him a cover and then spend the next five pages talking about what he "supposedly" does....it's just bad journalism and a waste of an article they could have done a good job on...like something from the alternative scene. No coverage is better coverage than this piece of crap.

I haven't read it yet but I agree with that statement. Do it right or don't do it at all. I don't agree with any publicity is good publicity. Getting one mic in the source for instance will probably ruin your career. The article says he has only performed once, never released any albums, but claims to be the next big thing.

Im glad they went in on him. Too many people who wish to be rappers live a "false" lifestyle and its pathetic. Dressing like you are a star, acting like you are bigger then you are, and walking around like other people care who they are.

Stupid shit. There is a list of artists that are exactly like Sonny Long. The general public laughs at people like him, just like me. Why did you show up with a bodygaurd in a upscale resturante? Thats some funny shit!!!!

She isn't doing him wrong he is doing him self wrong telling lies. The woman is doing her due diligence on artist. Why don't you have Niki do a article on you? the New Times is a known controversial publication. The article did a good job of putting him on blast just like they do Sheriff Joe. Any press is good press for someone at the end of the day but not for this shit" after this his rap career is 72 inches deep. I bet there is a laundry list of artist that fall in to this same bracket.

i disagree. if how you and the writer feel is the reality, they shouldn't have wasted the valuable cover space to spend time running the city down at his expense. cover someone who is actually doing something if that's her/your beef with the dude.

To answer my own question, I dont think there are many people right now that deserve a write up. Maybe Pulse/Ryhme Reason. As far as a individual artist...I can't think of any. If you want to support a good band/group, or show the public AZ has good music, I would do a write up on Insects or Silver Madalion.

they did willy under the guise of a bunch of other crap...and that article was another agenda just like this one is. i don't follow new times much, but i do wonder if they do all the acts from the other scenes this dirty.

i'm not saying articles have to be straight-up kiss-ass sessions, but there is obviously always a motive to knock the scene with every article written and printed. always super critical and looking to put people on blast. i feel like they don't look at the non-hip-hop scenes through such a jaded lens.

i don't see any evidence that he lied about everything. i also don't see any evidence that everything he said was the truth. the point is why waste the effort, space and energy to turn out an article like this when they could have done something on someone like random and how he's doing hip-hop and is a teacher and just lost his gig and so on and so forth...there are all kinds of ways to spend space, time and energy, and this is just another waste of a way.
